Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pet

Every year there are more than 100,000 cases of pet poisoning in the U.S. Many of these were caused by substances you probably have in your home, substances that may seem perfectly harmless to you. But just because something is safe for people doesn't mean it won't hurt beloved pets.

Some of the most dangerous dog poisons are foods and medications we take on a daily basis. Please watch out for these items and keep them away from your pets. Here is a list of common food items you should avoid:

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Avocado
  • Chocolate (all forms)
  • Citrus (in large quantities)
  • Coconut
  • Coffee (all forms)
  • Essential Oils
  • Fatty foods
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Moldy or spoiled foods
  • Onions, onion powder
  • Raisins and grapes
  • Salt
  • Yeast dough
  • Garlic
  • Chicken bones (any cooked bones actually since these splinter and can cause damage to internal structures when swallowed!)
  • Fitness shakes (powder mix) containing high amounts of caffeine
  • Products sweetened with xylitol (such as sugarless gum)
  • Tobacco products
